A few months ago, I switched to mangowm. And you might be interested as to why, as sway was really doing great for me.

It's tied to a few things, and I'll list them here.

Release cycle is faster with mangowm

Sway releases are very spread apart in time, cause they clearly aim for stability, and they don't rush to supporting any new things, which makes Sway super stable.

The downside of that is that they also don't try to add support for anything related to wayland protocols until well after wlroots support was added.

Sometimes, that could take a whiiiiiiile.

Mangowm still aims at being stable, but is still a young project, sometimes that brings issues, but more often it implies the speed of its evolution is higher.

I started using it around its 0.12 release, we're now on the 0.18.2 release, and tons of things were fixed/added, the switch to wlroots 0.20 was fast, and it's been working just great while adding new feature.

Sometimes you got to edit your config a bit so that you're ready for the next release, but that isn't uncommon on software that is frequently updated while being still young.

Better support of more modern stuff

In sway, despite AMD fixing the indirect scene scanout issues in mesa and in linux drm for AMD GPUs, I seemed to still need my workaround for screensharing, consisting in disabling it to avoid black flickers.

In mangowm, no need for any of that it all works just fine.

Support for multiple layouts in mangowm

In mangowm, you can have one tag (not exactly equivalent to a workspace but close enough) using a tiling layout, while another uses the monocle layout, which is basically fullscreen float for all windows.

This solved an issue I had with a few apps that really don't act well when used in tiling mode, or apps that have a UI that really doesn't work in a tiling layout. Godot, UDB and a few others work better for me in monocle mode.

Sure, on sway, I could write tons of window rule for those apps, but on mangowm, I can just open them in a tag I set to the monocle layout and voilĂ .

Conclusion

Sway has, since I stopped using it, fixed my indirect scene scanout issue... but that doesn't add the comfort of having layout choices and support for new things coming faster.

So, for now, I'll stick with mangowm :)
